How to make your web pages Google-friendly

Section titled “How to make your web pages Google-friendly”
  • <title> Not more than 70 characters, otherwise Google will chop the rest off in its search results
  • <meta keywords> No longer used by search engines. Leave this tag out completely, because it gives competitors clues as to the keywords you are using.
  • <meta description> Not more than 150 characters, or Google will chop the rest off. The meta description is often, but not always, used by Google for the “snippet” – the grey text under the search result.

This is what happens in the search results when your title and meta description are too long:

When they are the right length, it looks something like this:

  • <h1> You should have just one of these header tags on each page and it should normally include the search keywords that you want to attract. You can use <h2>, <h3> etc for other text headings on the page.
  • Include the keywords you are targeting somewhere in the first few sentences of text on the page. Usually there will be several sets of keywords and you should try to include them all, while keeping the text natural for human readers. Putting the keywords in a <strong> tag for emphasis helps a little.
  • Images should have descriptive alt tags and descriptive file names, for example kagoma-gate-nursery-school.jpg.

Spelling and grammar need to be good because they are used by Google as one measure of page quality.
